Lionel Messi is set to confront his previous team, Paris Saint Germain, following the advancement of his Inter Miami squad to the knockout stages of the FIFA Club World Cup on Tuesday morning (Nigeria time).

In their final group match against Palmieras, Messi’s Inter Miami was on the verge of finishing as group winners, leading 2-0 until the 80th minute when the situation changed.

Tadeo Allende opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a breakaway goal, and Luis Suarez added another in the second half with a solo effort.

However, Palmieras mounted a late comeback, resulting in a 2-2 draw, which allowed them to advance as group A winners instead of Inter Miami.

Messi and his teammates are now poised for a clash with European champions PSG in the next round, while Palmieras will face fellow Brazilian team Botafogo.

On Monday night, Paris Saint-Germain qualified from Group B alongside Botafogo, as Atlético Madrid failed to score the required goals to progress to the knockout stage.
